This intensive one-day course covers the essential requirements for bat rehabilitation, including hands-on practice handling and feeding native insectivorous bats. Participants are required to bring proof of rabies immunization to the workshop. This course is approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services for 8 hours of Animal Control officer continuing education, and by the American Association of Veterinary State Boards for 8 hours of continuing professional development for veterinarians and licensed veterinary technicians. The instructor, Kate Rugroden, is certified as an instructor by the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE); law enforcement personnel may apply to their agency training coordinator for CE credit hours.

Description

Learn the basic skills that are essential to successfully rehabilitating orphaned and injured bats and returning them to their natural habitat. Limited to six first-time students only, this class format is a combination of lecture, discussion, and hands-on activities designed to provide students with key information and experience. Limited to 6 people. All students will receive a copy of Bat World Sanctuary’s Standards and Medical Management for Captive Insectivorous Bats manual and a companion DVD.

The non-refundable* registration fee of $149 covers classroom instruction, the manual and DVD, handouts, and lab materials. Students must have completed the **rabies pre-exposure vaccination series prior to participation in this class, and will be asked to sign a waiver of liability prior to handling live bats. (Please don’t sign and email the waiver to us as it will be provided to you at class.)

*In the event that a student cannot attend a scheduled class, arrangements may be made to transfer the registration to a future class session.

** Please remember to bring your proof of rabies immunization with you to class. If you fail to provide proof of being vaccinated you will not be able to handle live bats during class (sorry, no exceptions).
