Wildlife Rehabilitation volunteer Orientation 02 Apr 20221000 Southeast Green Oaks Boulevard, Arlington, TX, USA
As a satellite facility of Bat World Sanctuary, Bat World MidCities provides care for orphaned, ill, and injured native bats and other wildlife in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. We are permitted by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Our facility is not open to the public, in compliance with state regulations. However, Bat World offers live webcams 24/7, as well as photos and videos on social media.

We offer a variety of professional development workshops related to wildlife rehabilitation, and have developed free-to-download resources  for community education programs. Workshop and program fees support the animals in our care. Bat World Sanctuary is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and we gratefully accept donations to help fund our work. We receive no government funding.

All of our courses are approved by Texas Parks and Wildlife, Texas Department of State Health Services, and the National Animal Care and Control Association for TX wildlife rehabilitator and TX Animal Control Officer CE hours, as well as CE hours for NACA members. Virtual classes are recorded and closed captioning is available on request. ASL interpretation for in-person classes can be arranged with sufficient notice.

Volunteer

Thank you for your interest in volunteering with Bat World MidCities. We are searching for volunteers to join us in rescuing and rehabilitating native Texas wildlife. Volunteers must be 18 years or older. Time commitments vary, depending upon the kinds of volunteer tasks fit your availability and interests. Please note that I do not have any volunteer opportunities at the Bat World MidCities location; like most wildlife rehabilitators I am home-based. However, there are several ways you can be involved.
Once we reach agreement on the level of participation that is best for you, there are a few ground rules.
  • If you are scheduled to assist with an event or have a meeting scheduled with me, please let me know as soon as possible if you are unable to keep that commitment
  • Training will depend on the level of involvement
  • Working with wildlife carries some risks of injury (scratches, bites, etc). You are responsible for your own health and safety; I cannot provide financial assistance for medical expenses
  • For satellite and transport subpermittees, an application to Texas Parks and Wildlife (including a back-ground check) is required

Download the volunteer application here, complete it, and return to bwmidcities@batworld.org. After reviewing your application, I will contact you to schedule a personal interview.
  • Age 18 or over
  • Able to work independently, with minimal supervision
  • Able to pass a TPWD background check
  • Access to reliable transportation

Responsibilities vary based on the volunteer role that best fits your availability and interests. Duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Cleaning animal enclosures
  • Preparing diets and feeding animals
  • Administering medications and treating injuries
  • Answering calls from the public
  • Transporting wildlife to a permitted rehabilitator or satellite subpermittee for care
  • Assisting with public education/outreach events

Volunteer Application

Download the volunteer application, complete the required information, sign and date the form, and return by email to bwmidcities@batworld.org. I will review your application and contact you to schedule a personal interview. Please note, all volunteer opportunities are in Texas.

Making Sense of TX Wildlife Laws 2024 Participant Guide

Possession of various wildlife species in Texas is regulated by the Texas State Administrative Code, County and Municipal regulations, and Federal laws. These laws, regulations, and administrative rules can be confusing and, in some cases, may be in conflict with one or more other governing bodies. Recent updates and revisions to the administrative code include reporting requirements for Animal Control agencies as well as changes to the permitting process for wildlife rehabilitators and new guidance for veterinarians. In order to understand the nuances of the various laws and regulations, and unravel potential conflicts to ensure that laws are correctly enforced, it is important to look at the historical development of these laws for context. Having established a contextual foundation, one can then look at specific elements of the laws, and identify and resolve conflicts between the various governing bodies. Ultimately, the goal of this workshop is to enable participants to understand the current state and federal regulations governing wildlife care, transportation, and possession. Armed with this information, shelter personnel will be able to make appropriate decisions when presented with wildlife issues.

TX Nuisance Furbearing Animal Trap and Release Monthly Report Form

This form is required by TPWD for all Animal Control agencies, wildlife removal/pest control operators, and other organizations that may be involved in trapping and relocating native furbearing wildlife. A letter of authorization (LOA) from the department is also required. See sections 65.379 and 65.381 of the Texas Administrative Code for additional information.
